The land at Wanborough Fields is the large open field running down from the Hog’s Back to Westwood Lane and the smaller field to the right just before the first sharp bend to the left coming from Normandy. The upper half of this land is in the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and the lower half is designated an Area of Great Landscape Value (AGLV). As long ago as 2013 it was recommended that the AONB boundary be changed to include the AGLV. This has dragged on and on, but earlier this year we were promised that Natural England, who would be responsible for any review, were shortly to start on it.

Since the land in question was sold a couple of years ago to a ‘land bank’ and parcelled up into individual lots – with misleading marketing encouraging prospective buyers to think that planning permission for housing development might be obtainable – the area has been the target of numerous aggressive attempts at inappropriate development. Individual plots continue to be marketed. Thanks to the sterling work done by local Wanborough residents and by residents who have taken the trouble to lodge objections, most of these have been rebuffed, but there is a need for continued vigilance. There is now a new "AUCTION" sign positioned on the fencing about half way down Wanborough Hill indicating at least one of the plot purchasers is attempting to cash in.
